“In [The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique] we have sought only to limn the barest of outlines;
it will remain for others to fill in the interior. ” (Russell and Burch 1959)
In 1959, William Russell and Rex Burch published their book The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique. In it, they proposed a new framework to improve the treatment of laboratory animals, known as the 3R principle. Their scientific and philosophical treatise not only emphasizes the humane treatment of laboratory animals but also presents compelling arguments about how this approach enhances scientific quality in animal-based studies and promotes clinical translation. At the Lang Laboratory, we are committed to actively implementing the 3Rs—Refine, Replace, and Reduce—whenever possible, to minimize the use of laboratory animals, enhance research practices, and foster a Culture of Care.
We use tunnel handling and provide environmental enrichment to reduce stress and enhance the well-being of our mice. Additionally, we have optimized pain management protocols and validated clinical scoring systems for routine monitoring, particularly after procedures such as osteotomy surgery.
We develop and utilize complex in vitro models to complement animal experiments and work toward their replacement. We stay informed about recent advancements and collaborate with experts to implement multiphysiological systems (MPS). We establish an xeno (animal)-free cell culture using alternatives for animal-derived serum and recombinant antibodies & growth factors
Collaboration partners: Prof. Bettina Seeger (University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover), Prof. Manuela Raimondi (Polimi Milan), Riccardo Gottardi, PhD (CHOP), Mousa Younesi, PhD (UPenn), Frank Schulze, PhD & Janosch Schoon, PhD (University of Greifswald)
We actively engage in tissue and organ sharing to reduce animal use and follow sustainable breeding practices. We ensure that experimental planning is PREPAREd to ARRIVE, and we support the preregistration of studies.
Dr. Lang is a co-founder of Rethink3R, an initiative aimed at organizing interdisciplinary workshops focused on the 3Rs, utilizing Design Thinking methods. Design Thinking is an innovation method that helps to find practical and user-centred solutions in an effective team-work setting.
We actively participate in local and European 3R societies and networking projects. We empower young investigators (YOU) to find the inspiration and confidence to incorporate the 3Rs into their future work, bringing these ideas into our community.
